Optical Services and Contact Lenses

Optical Services

  • A full-fledged optical shop functions within the premises of the clinic, whose objective is to provide scientific and supervised dispensing of spectacles, at reasonable cost.
  • Designer frames like Taugheuer, Gucci, Police, Tommy, and Dolce&Gabanna are available at the optical shop.
  • Patients could opt for branded lenses, from trendy companies like Essilor, Hoya, Rodenstock, Seiko or Zeiss, if they choose to. Besides standard bifocal lenses, state-of-the art lenses like the progressive or Varilux lenses, high refractive index lenses, plastic lenses with anti-reflective coating, and lenses with ultraviolet protection are available. For those whose occupation predisposes them to ocular trauma, polycarbonate lenses would help; these are available, too, at the clinic.
  • Mr. Rammohan Kumar,  a senior optometrist, who is also an expert in grinding lenses,  has taken upon himself the responsibility of setting up, monitoring, and ensuring quality control of the products sold at the clinic’s optical outlet.

Contact Lenses

  • For patients who are keen on cosmesis, and who are averse to the idea of undergoing laser correction or surgery for the same, the option of wearing contact lenses would be offered. After evaluating the corneal curvature, with the Topcon autorefracto-cum-keratometer, a contact lens fitting trial would be carried out, especially for semi-soft or rigid gas permeable (RGP) lenses.
  • Besides the conventional non-disposable  soft contact lenses, which need to be changed once a year, other options, too, are available for soft contact lens users: the daily disposable lens and the extended -wear lens are two such options.  For patients with keratoconus, and steeper than normal corneas, a separate keratoconus RGP trial lens set is available, and appropriate fitting could be carried out.
  • Patients with a cylindrical refractive power of 1 D or more could use either RGP lenses (could correct up to 4D of cylindrical refractive power) or toric soft contact lenses (available only for cylindrical power up to 2.25 D). Other types of contact lenses available at the clinic include bandage contact lenses, cosmetic contact lenses and X-chrome contact lenses. After the fitting trial, the lenses could be ordered at the Jayalakshmi Eye Clinic itself. The patient could choose either the Bausch & Lomb or the Johnson&Johnson brands.
  • The types of disposable lenses available are daily disposable, monthly disposable, quarterly disposable (Bausch&Lomb), and the fortnightly disposable (Johnson&Johnson).
  • In toric lenses, the monthly disposable option is available.
  • Multifocal contact lenses are available, too.
  • The non-disposable contact lens should not be worn for more than 8 hours a day, because it has got only 38% of water, whereas monthly disposable lenses could be used for 12 hours a day – on account of its 59% water content.
  • Purevision lens is an extended wear lens, which can be worn for up to 18 hours a day, as it is made up of silicone hydrogel, whose Dk/t value is 130 – it scores over the other types of soft contact lenses in terms of patient comfort, reduced haloes, and ability to provide clear vision in conditions of dim illumination.
  • Mr. Rammohan Kumar would ensure that the pair of lenses received from the company of the patient’s choice, matches the prescription issued at the clinic, and then check whether the new pair of lens fits well. A detailed contact lens teaching and counselling session would follow: the patient would be sensitized to the importance of sticking to the wearing schedule applicable for the type of contact lens chosen; told about the daily cleaning and disinfection schedule; and taught the technique of wearing and removing their lenses.
