He worked at the rural outreach program of the Joseph Eye Hospital, Tiruchirapalli for a year and did a year’s residency at the Institute of Ophthalmology there.  He later pursued short-term fellowship programs in Cornea and intraocular lens implantation at the L. V. Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad.

Dr. C. Madhavan joined Sankara Nethralaya, his alma mater in ophthalmology, as Associate Consultant, in January 1999. Later he was promoted to the post of Consultant, and thereafter to the faculty position of Senior Consultant in 2007, a position that he held until 2009.  At Sankara Nethralaya, he was involved in the surgical training of postgraduates, general ophthalmology and sub-specialty fellows. Besides being in the faculty of the Elite School of Optometry – the prestigious school of optometry run by Sankara Nethralaya – he also had the distinction of teaching and mentoring successive batches of ophthalmologists, who trained in small incision cataract surgery and phacoemulsification, under the aegis of the Sir Ratan Tata Fellowship training program.

Between January 2006 and November 2008, he headed Sankara Nethralaya’s branch in Vellore, at the Narayani Hospital and Research Centre. Dr. Madhavan joined the L. V. Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad, as Consultant, Rural Eye Services, in November 2009 and served in that capacity, in LVPEI’s secondary care centres at Nellore and Kandukur, until January 31, 2011 (a period of one year-and-three months). In April 2011, he trained in laser refractive surgeries (lasiks and photorefractive keratectomies) under Dr. Rupal Shah, at the New Vision Laser Centre, Baroda, during which he performed microkeratome lasiks on 37 eyes and photorefractive keratectomies on 2 eyes, under her expert supervision. During a nine month-long stint with the Vasan Eye Care network – at their Tondiarpet branch in Madras – he performed microkeratome lasiks on 74 eyes, photorefractive keratectomies on 2 eyes, epilasiks on 6 eyes, and phakic IOL (ICL) implantation in 3 eyes.

To complement his extensive exposure to retinal diseases – during his days of residency and, subsequently, in the faculty at Sankara Nethralaya – he underwent a month-long hands-on training in retinal lasers at the L. V. Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad, in May 2012. In the course of that training, he performed pan retinal photocoagulations, focal laser treatment of eyes with diabetic maculopathy and central serous chorioretinopathy, and barrage laser photocoagulation of peripheral retinal lesions with the Zeiss frequency double yag laser.

In his stints at Sankara Nethralaya, the L. V. Prasad Eye Institute and at the Vasan Eye Care Network, Dr. Madhavan has performed 5516 intraocular and extra ocular surgeries. In a surgical career spanning more than eighteen-and-half years, he has performed nearly 6500 intraocular and extra ocular surgeries. His study on the “Utility of the Ultrasound Biomicroscope in the pre-operative evaluation of penetrating keratoplasty”, done during his first stint with the L. V. Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad, was presented as a scientific poster at the annual meet of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1998. He has two publications in peer-reviewed journals (one each in the ‘Cornea’ and the Indian Journal of Ophthalmology), besides a presentation apiece at the annual conference of the Tamil Nadu Ophthalmic Association, 1995, and the annual meeting of the All India Ophthalmological Society in 2000.

Dr. C. Madhavan completed his M. B. B. S. graduated from the Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore, in 1990; and completed his post graduate diploma in ophthalmology (D. O.) at the C. U. Shah postgraduate training centre, Medical Research Foundation, Sankara Nethralaya, Madras, in 1993.
